Mecanismo Velador (Perú, 2014) es un cortometraje experimental que, mediante el uso de material fílmico, de retazos de viejos trailers en 35mm de películas norteamericanas, busca reflexionar sobre los efectos que el cine comercial tiene sobre sus espectadores y sobre los mecanismos que Hollywood utiliza para influir sobre el público.

In 2013, I saw Dirk de Bruyn’s short film WAP at the Revelation Film Festival in Perth. In terms of its formal experimentation, the film evokes Martin Arnold’s Cinemnesis. Thematically, it takes a critical eye to the White Australia Policy, scrutinising what the policy promised new migrants with one hand while systematically refusing with the other.

MELBOURNE INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL: EXPERIMENTAL SHORT FILM PROGRAM

At this year’s Melbourne International Film Festival (MIFF) the program is lively, preferencing play over daring. Opening the program with Australian filmmaker Richard Tuohy’s dual 16mm film projection work, Dot Matrix, is a little like allowing us to eat dessert before dinner. Tuohy uses Man Ray’s ‘rayograph’ process to create the images.
